Dental Hygiene includes the practices of keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. It also protects from bacterial and other microbial infections. Dental Hygiene is the important part of all hygienic practices that should be included in our daily routine.

How to maintain good dental hygiene?

1. Use Fluoridated water:

 Fluoridated water contains an optimal amount of fluorine in water, which helps to prevent tooth decay, and keeps gums healthy. Acids demineralize the outer protective covering of teeth known as enamel, and cause tooth decay. Bacteria, present in mouth, form acids from the sugars we eat and destroy teeth enamel. So, fluoride present in water stops demineralisation and protects teeth.

2. Use fluoridated toothpaste for better dental hygiene:

Fluoridated toothpastes are highly effective in preventing cavities (tooth decay). Fluorine not only repairs the persistent tooth decay but also strengthen the developing teeth in Children.

3. Use toothbrush with criss cross bristles: 

 A toothbrush with criss cross bristles helps to remove the plaque from mouth areas that are hard to reach by straight bristles toothbrush. In this way, all plaque present between teeth can be removed. In addition to above mentioned benefits, criss cross bristles are pointed at opposite angle to each other. This property helps in better dental hygiene.

4. Visit your dentist every six month:

 Health specialists recommend visiting your dentist every six month. It helps to examine any deteriorating change or decay in teeth. Apply only those dental medicines that are recommended by your dentist. Because, some medicines may cause dryness in mouth and throat leading to bad mouth taste. Above all, a dentist better know and examine your teeth.

5. Apply sealants, if cavities persist:

 If tooth decay (cavities) remains for so long even after practicing dental hygiene, then it’s better to apply sealants in your teeth. Sealants cover the cavities present in your teeth and stop tooth decay.

6. Avoid alcoholic drinks and smoking:

To maintain a good dental hygiene, it’s important to avoid alcoholic drinks and smoking. People, who smoke, are 3-6% more vulnerable to tooth decay and periodontal diseases. So avoid alcoholic drinks and smoking to maintain good dental hygiene.

7. Brush your teeth regularly:

Brush your teeth using a fluoridated toothpaste, twice a day. It helps to remove any food particles left within teeth gums. Brushing your teeth on regular basis, and after a meal stops bacteria to form plaque or cause demineralisation. Overall, brushing your teeth is the best way to maintain dental hygiene.

8. Drink plenty of water:

Sometimes, our mouth get dry because of dental medication or using high amount of toothpaste for brushing. So, it’s better to drink plenty of water to moisturise your mouth and maintain a dental hygienic practice.

9. Avoid eating too much sugary food:

Sugary food, when degraded in mouth, increase the amount of acids which destroys the enamel. So avoid eating too much sugar containing food. Moreover, after taking a sweet meal, make sure to brush the tooth to prevent tooth decay.

10. Do Flossing on daily basis:

 Flossing is a techniques of removing buried debris and plaque between the teeth, specially behind molars. It involves moving a synthetic cord between your teeth to remove the plaque behind the teeth. It is better to do flossing daily to keep healthy gums and strong teeth. In addition to that, flossing helps to remove any permanent plaque between the teeth.

 All the practices, mentioned above, have a very great role in maintaining oral hygiene. It is very beneficial to follow dental hygienic practice on a regular basis.
